Quick answer
To apply for TANF in New York: In New York, TANF families apply for Family Assistance (Temporary Assistance) through myBenefits. ny. Applying is free through the official agency.
What this program helps with
TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) provides monthly cash assistance to low-income families with children – and in some cases pregnant people – to help pay for basics like food, rent, utilities, and clothing. Most states also connect you to work, job training, and other support services.
Who may qualify
TANF serves low-income families that include a child (and in some states a pregnant person). Eligibility is based on income, resources, and household size. You generally must be a state resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, provide Social Security numbers, and – for adults able to work – take part in work or job-training activities. There is a federal lifetime limit (generally about 60 months), and each state sets its own income limits and rules. A caseworker makes the final decision.
How to apply or manage benefits
In New York, TANF families apply for Family Assistance (Temporary Assistance) through myBenefits.ny.gov or a local department of social services. Adults able to work must meet work requirements.
Documents you may need
Have ready: photo ID, Social Security numbers for the household, proof of income and resources, proof of your address, and birth certificates or proof of relationship for the children. Bring copies and keep your originals.
What to expect
After you apply, expect an interview (by phone or in person) and a review of your income, resources, and household. Processing usually takes a few weeks. If approved, cash benefits are loaded onto your state EBT card each month, and adults able to work may be assigned work or training activities. Report changes in income or household promptly to avoid an overpayment.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to work to get TANF?
Adults who are able to work generally must take part in work or job-training activities, but there are exemptions – for example a parent of a very young child or someone with a disability. Your caseworker explains what applies to you.
How long can I get TANF?
There is a federal lifetime limit of about 60 months for adults, and some states set shorter limits. Time you received TANF in other states may count. Confirm your state’s rules on the official site.

How to apply for cash assistance in New York, and one thing it unlocks
Who runs it. New York cash assistance is administered by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) and delivered through local social services districts — your county, or the City of New York if you live there. The district office is who decides your case.
Where to apply. Applications are made through myBenefits, New York’s benefits portal, which also covers SNAP. Starting there means one account rather than one per programme.
Getting cash assistance makes you automatically income-eligible for WIC. This is the most useful thing on this page and almost nobody acts on it. The New York State Department of Health states that you are automatically income eligible for WIC if you already receive TANF cash assistance — as well as Medicaid, SNAP, the Essential Plan, or Head Start. If you have a child under five, or someone in the household is pregnant or recently gave birth, apply for WIC without waiting to be income-tested again.
WIC is worth applying for even while working. The same Department of Health page states you can receive WIC even if you and other household members are working. Coming off cash assistance into a job does not by itself end a WIC entitlement.
A note on sourcing. New York’s own cash-assistance pages could not be reached when this page was last reviewed — the state’s servers refuse connections from this network. So no New York figure, time limit or eligibility rule is quoted here. The links above were adjudicated as live; for the state’s own wording, start from them.
Documents. The office decides what it needs, but the list barely changes between programmes — identity, household, income, and residence. Build a document checklist for your situation before the appointment rather than after it.
