Check your LIHEAP status
LIHEAP (home energy help) is run by your state or local office — check your status with the same agency that took your application.
- Who handles it: Your state or local LIHEAP office (LIHEAP is administered by states, tribes, and territories)
- Find your office: National Energy Assistance Referral (NEAR) 1-866-674-6327, TTY 1-866-367-6228, weekdays 9am–7pm ET
- Check status: Call or sign in to your state’s benefits portal with your application ID; ask whether a payment was sent to your utility
- Timeline: Processing varies by state and season; crisis or shutoff cases are handled faster — say so if you have a disconnection notice
- If denied: Ask your local office how to request a review or reapply when funds reopen

Pennsylvania LIHEAP application status
Check your Pennsylvania LIHEAP (heating help) application at trackmybenefits.pa.gov (no login needed). Important: LIHEAP cannot be renewed through COMPASS — you must apply every year; applying online through COMPASS is faster for returning applicants. The LIHEAP season runs roughly November through April.

After you apply for energy-bill help through LIHEAP, you may be anxious to know where your application stands – especially if a bill is due. Because LIHEAP is run locally, checking status usually means contacting the agency where you applied. Here is how in 2026.
Where to check
LIHEAP is delivered by local agencies (often community action agencies), not a single national office. Check your status with the same agency or office where you applied. Many states also have an online benefits portal or phone line. If you are not sure who handles it, dial 2-1-1. New to the program? See how to apply for LIHEAP and the utility assistance guide.
What you need to check
- Your application or client ID (on your confirmation).
- The name of the household member who applied.
- The date you applied.
Checking is free – never pay anyone to check your status.
What the stages usually mean
- Received / pending: your application is in the queue.
- Needs information: the agency needs a document – respond fast to avoid delay.
- Approved: a benefit is set; energy help may be paid directly to your utility.
- Denied: you can ask why and appeal, or reapply if your situation changes.
If a shutoff is coming while you wait
Do not wait for a decision if your power is at risk. Tell the agency it is urgent (many have a crisis process), and tell your utility you applied for LIHEAP and ask about protections. See how to stop a utility shutoff and help with a past-due electric bill. In summer heat, ask about cooling assistance.
Tips
- Keep your confirmation and any reference numbers.
- Respond immediately to any request for documents (see LIHEAP documents).
- Update your contact info so you do not miss a notice.
- In Texas, help is delivered as CEAP – see Texas LIHEAP (CEAP). If your water bill is also behind, see help paying your water bill.
What to do next
Contact the agency where you applied with your ID, respond quickly to any request, and flag any shutoff as urgent. Households with limited income can also review all benefits for low-income families and the benefits overview for seniors.
