Quick answer: There is no reliable nationwide average for a Housing Choice Voucher waiting list. Each public housing agency (PHA) manages its own list, preferences, selection method, and opening schedule. Some lists are closed, and time on a list does not guarantee assistance.
Find the PHA that accepts applications
Use HUD’s PHA contact directory. HUD notes that high demand may make it useful to apply to multiple PHA waiting lists. Check residency or portability rules before accepting assistance outside your current area.
How applicants are selected
A PHA may use date-and-time order, a lottery, local preferences, or a combination. Preferences can include circumstances defined in the PHA’s administrative plan. Ask the PHA how ranking works rather than assuming the oldest application is always first.
Keep your application active
- Save the confirmation or application number.
- Update address, telephone number, email, household members, and accessibility needs.
- Respond to every update or purge notice by its deadline.
- Keep screenshots or delivery receipts.
- Check the status only through the PHA’s published channel.
If the PHA removes your name
Request the written reason and the PHA’s review or hearing procedure immediately. Provide proof that you responded or updated information on time. Deadlines are local and can be short.
Avoid scams
A legitimate PHA does not sell a guaranteed place or voucher. Treat payment requests, social-media-only application links, and promises of immediate approval as warning signs.
