Who Qualifies for SSI in 2026? Income & Resource Limits
SSI is a federal needs-based program for people who are age 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability and who meet income, resource, citizenship, and residence rules. Meeting one test does not guarantee approval; SSA evaluates all applicable rules.
Age, blindness, or disability
An adult younger than 65 generally must have a medically determinable condition expected to result in death or last at least 12 months and that prevents substantial gainful activity. Different disability rules apply to children. People age 65 or older do not need to prove disability.
2026 payment and resource figures
The maximum federal SSI payment in 2026 is $994 per month for one eligible person and $1,491 for an eligible couple before reductions. Countable resources generally must not exceed $2,000 for one person or $3,000 for a couple. A home used as the principal residence and one transportation vehicle are commonly excluded.
Income is not counted dollar for dollar
SSA separates earned, unearned, and in-kind income and applies exclusions. Many applicants may use a $20 general exclusion; earned income can also receive a $65 exclusion plus exclusion of half the remainder. Household and state circumstances can change the actual result.
Citizenship and residence
Applicants generally must be U.S. citizens or qualifying noncitizens and live in the United States or an eligible territory under the program rules. Absence from the country, residence in certain institutions, or immigration classification may affect eligibility.
Apply and document the facts
Start with SSA’s SSI eligibility page and application information. Gather identity, household, income, asset, housing, and medical records. Ask for a written decision and appeal on time if SSA uses incorrect facts.
